One of the perks of my workplace is that I have been able to have the use of a PowerBook. I have at times worked from a local coffee shop and almost always had it with me on trips that I have taken. Back in 2002, when Anthony and I trekked to San Francisco for MacWorld, I ordered one of the new white iBooks. I loved that computer. It was the right size, had a good feel, and it was mine. Unfortunately, it had its issues (display and the disc drive eject mechanism) and had to be repaired. After sending it in for repair one time, I was quite happy with my iBook. Eventually work provided us with updated PowerBooks (the Titanium 867) and I couldn’t justify keeping the iBook when I was carrying around the new Titanium. -Who wouldn’t!? I was fortunate in finding a buyer for my iBook through a coworker and my iBook went off to a new home.
It’s interesting to me how things happen in cycles. I had been itching for one of the more recent aluminum PowerBooks and when Apple released the updated PowerBook with the ‘high definition’ display I couldn’t not do it. Besides, this was, in all likelihood, going to be the last of the PowerPC-based ‘books, and generally it’s wise to avoid the first revision or two of a new product line, such as the new MacBook. It only made sense to buy into something that is ‘tried and true.’
